A smutch of guilt. Also a restless racing heart without hope of sleep and no desire for anything except to be where he was, alone under the stars, a crescent moon with the tips pronged up to form a cup or devilâs horns just risen over the eastern horizon. Dead ahead. As if they were to hold course and the moon remain where it was they might sail between those tips. And enter where?
The guilt was not about Lydia. Or if so but faintly because she was yet stretched out and around him in ways he could not confine to any simple solution or equation, unable to lock her into any place other than the one she inhabited. Which he only partly knew and somewhat guessed and even less understood beyond the fact that he wanted to gain those things. So was it then the memory, the heartâs true fidelity to Olivia? Somewhat, and rightfully so, although even as he stood within this he guessed if she were able sheâd only warn Henry to be cautious, knowing his heart as she did. And also knowing and sharing his love, her own, of the physicality of life, of the sensual, the erotic and even the daring thrill of the edge. The only time their lovemaking had not receded but tamped itself had been in the recent years when Robert had returned to them and even then it was not gone, only more cautious then usual. Although nothing ever matched those early years, after their first tentative gropings and joinings had silently frustrated both even as each professed great satisfaction. Then came, three months into their marriage, the autumn afternoon when he returned from his classes to the off-campus house owned by the college for younger less prominent faculty members and, he later realized, much later, that Olivia had lunched with her motherâHenry coming into the house to find her dress crumpled on the floor at the bottom of the stairs, where he paused and studied this in mute alarm before noting partway up the stairs her corset and pantaloons, then, dangling from the top stair the toe and foot section of a silk stocking and he began to make his way up, finding the other stocking next to its mate at the top and looking down the hall, just outside the open bathroom door the garters in a twisted figure-eight and went down to stand in the door and there she was, her still-then long hair bound upon the top of her head, the bubbles of the bath foaming around her, her gaze direct and bold upon him, her arms bare and pink over the edges of the tub trailing water and bubble remnants on the tiles, her heavy high breasts with their puffed straining nipples as a second pair of eyes also direct and bold.
Heâd stood a moment, his trousers filling and then said, âAm I interrupting or should I join you?â
âWhat you should do,â she said, âis remove your clothes and then lift me out of here and weâll figure it out from there.
